Dr. Nicholas (Nick) Kaminski

Dr. Nicholas (Nick) Kaminski is the Department Manager for the Wireless Research Department at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Here, he leads a team of researchers to build future communication systems for critical national needs. This work resides at the intersection of artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) and advanced communications systems. Nick’s research explores using AI/ML to control communication systems and better understand the radio frequency (RF) environment. His work also examines the development of communications systems that can support and interact with AI/ML capabilities as part of a larger system. Nick and his team take a multi-disciplinary approach to research that draws from a wide variety of fields, but remains grouped in practical, implementation-driven experimentation. Nick has significant experience in the research and development of flexible, adaptive systems in both international academic and national security focused areas prior to joining INL in May 2023. His prior experience includes providing subject matter expertise to DoD on the practical use of AI/ML at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA). Before that, Nick established and federated open testbeds to support the remote development of AI/ML for communications across Europe. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).
